Abstract:
Use of mobile and sensor technologies in learning has emerged as a growing research area, and has given rise to a lot of research that takes advantage of learner's location, environment, proximity and situation to contextualizing the learning process. The adaptivity and personalization in these scenarios have taken a new meaning by bringing authentic learning much closer to holistic learning by seamlesasly integrating physical objects available in the learner's vicinity with virtual information in real-time. Such ubiquitous environments not only break the barriers for education by widening the access to those who cannot come to a physical classroom but also increase the richness of the instruction by integrating multiple sources of instruction, contextualization and real-time location-aware learning, hence overcoming the limitations of classroom learning.

This talk will demonstrate a number of innovations taking place for efficient transition of learner from e-learning to ubiquitous learning. These innovations have aimed at exploring the possibilities of adaptivity in ubiquitous learning and to provide learners with a learning environment which facilitates learning at any time and any place in a personalized manner. Modelling of learners is a primary focus, anytime anywhere, using heterogenous devices, when they are learning using physical objects and virtual information and when they interact with peers. Their current location and context is also considered in order to provide them with appropriate content and problem scenarios in the real world.

The talk will demonstrate the overall infrastructure, including the global student model and the prototype ubiquitous learning application, called Personalized Adaptive Learning Dashboard, that includes Instructor portal and Student portal. Various components of the application will be discussed, such as location-aware image browsing in situated semantic hierarchy relevant to learner input, automatic example creation for supporting students' concept learning by using semantic relations based on semantic roles, contextual content creation in ubiquitous environments using crowdsourcing approach, multi-object oriented augmented reality for location-sensitive ubiquitous learning, and finally the Mobile Virtual Campus for collaborative learning in ubiquitous environments.
